Who wants a copy of
Apocryphal Lorca? I will give away
one copy to the person with a mailing address in the USA who gives me the best reason (in comments below) why he or she should receive it. Contest closes at 10 p.m., Midwestern time, Friday July 3. I am the final and only arbiter of what the "best reason" is.
Since I already own the book and am, in any case, disqualified by geography, I'd like to argue the case for sending it to Laura Carter, who struggles as genuinely with the problem of modernism and romance as anyone I know of, and whose fearlessness in the face of kitsch, that peculiar aesthetic death that circles the house before the Duende, or does not, enter, is, or at least should be, legendary. She, too, understood, or certainly felt, the force of your remark about losing any confrontation with modernism on its own territory. She was, perhaps, more qualified than any of us to feel it. I think your book will make a significant contribution to her Bildung, her building, the tenement she occupies, and that we all, each in our own way, walk up to.
ResponderEliminarI hadn't foreseen someone about asking for a copy for someone else, but I guess that's fine too. I've extended the deadline through Friday. You can ask for yourself, or give me a reason why a third party should be the winner.
ResponderEliminarThanks. I notice I missed a word: "...the Duende does, or does not, enter..."
ResponderEliminarI think Thomas' request is so eloquent I'd like to provide a second vote for giving the book to Laura Carter.
ResponderEliminarNo fair! I don't have an American address!
ResponderEliminarMy August giveaway will be for all of North America.
ResponderEliminarI should have the book because tengo mucho hambre.
ResponderEliminarAnd I should have it because I admire Spicer and Bob Kaufman, and on finishing this book will donate it to the San Francisco library.
ResponderEliminarHmm, actually I see they bought one of your earlier books, so donating it would be counterproductive from your point of view. Well, the rest of the argument stands.
