To paraphrase Jonathan's precis of what makes good criticism: Account for some previously unexplored or misunderstood quality of someone's poetry, without which the work would be ordinary. Do so in good prose..

And do so concisely, unlike my wordy post below.

Einstein noted that "we want our models to be as simple as possible ... but not too simple."

Same goes, I say, with paraphrase.

Jordan's leaves out so many essential elements of your brief discussion that it cannot even be described as a summary let alone a paraphrase.

Also, concision is always relative to the amount of information conveyed. A 2000-page book could be concise, conceivably...

No question about that. The statement "do so in good prose" is also very charming.
