Still trying to figure out what any of this has to do with protective tarrifs on British grain. And tomorrow I won't even know what this sentence refers to.
Something you wrote made me see the mainstream/anti-mainstream standoff as a conflict about trade barriers imposed by mainstream publications and organizations to keep anti-mainstream material out of circulation -- this anti-competitive gesture had the effect of hastening the irrelevance of the writers then puffed up by the mainstream (if not the irrelevance of the mainstream itself...)?

No. That actually makes sense in some kind of perverse way.
