Trilling
David Shapiro told me that Lionel Trilling saw no value at all in Latin American literature, thought that it shouldn't be taught at all. I wasn't surprised.
Maybe he was just trying to be provocative. I make statements of this kind all the time but I don't really mean them. I just aim to make people see things in a different way.
No. I think this revealed what English professors of a certain generation thought. It was clear from the context that Trilling had never heard of any Latin American writer at all.

Given that Tolstoy is the Balzac of the Russians, that's an interesting question, indeed. :-)
