My interests tend to be pull me in two directions. I call these "song" and "philosophy" for short. In other words, poetry as song, poetry as part of intellectual history. Poetry is the total art, so really there is a continuum of interests between these two poles.
That sort of touches on a possible explanation as to why song lyrics don't seem like poetry to many people: with an explicit melody, the song in the poem can be felt to overwhelm its philosophy.

It's always comforting to know we think a like, Jonathan. I call it "lyric" and "lamplight", but it's the same idea, I think.
