Are there two Kerouacs, the sociological one and the the real (literary) one? Discuss.

"real (literary)" -- funny declaration of self-awareness, my friend!

There is a third Kerouac, the biographical one, alas.

As you know, Kerouac was very important to me, an inspiration. As a writer. As a person, he was often rotten: covered up a murder, refused to recognize the daughter he fathered, disparaged homosexuals but had sex with men, and on and on.

His writing was wildly uneven -- but that's OK, because we judge writers by their best writing. Kerouac wrote some of the best paragraphs and lines of the 20th century.
