I have a vague idea of what the word contumely means. I've looked it up many times, in fact. But it is one of those words that I have to look up each time I want to know what it means. It just doesn't stick. It is a word without adhesive, for me.

  1. It's also a word that once you do know what it means, you see it happening everywhere; it is very specific kind of insolence--and coming back. Long time coming since Shakespeare used it, but some words are never antique. This kind of speech is popular in the tavern where I go myself, not the word but the behavior the word describes. It is the poet's obligation to employ this kind of material language.
